Everything you need to write a story is in your smartphone: camera, notetaking app and publishing tool.
I tested the theory last weekend by taking picture at the 2014 Rose Festival Parade in downtown Portland. Here’s the result:
Here’s what I used:
- Camera – The camera on my almost two-year-old Motorola Droid is only so so. The images are OK here, but when I take photos from inside the Facebook app, they’re frequently not as clear. I cannot wait until next month when my contract runs out and I can unload this phone and upgrade to something with a better camera. (If you have an Android phone and love the camera, let me know what you’re using.)
- Notetaking app – I didn’t take notes for this photo essay. But if I’d wanted, I could have used the Evernote app I’d previously downloaded to my phone. With Evernote you can speak or type in notes and access them later on a laptop or through the web.
- Publishing tool – I published some of these photos immediately to my Facebook page. I also could have published them on Twitter or Pinterest. Or I could have opened a WordPress app (here’s a link to the Android version, and the iOS version) and used it to write this post.

Nice job! And thanks for the tips on the tools. I’m excited to try them out.
By the way, I have a Samsung Galaxy phone and it’s kind of changing my life regarding photos. On my recent trip to NYC, I ran out to go look at the tulips in bloom at Bryant Park and forgot my big camera. (I know, stupid. Grrrrrr.) So I pulled out my phone and took pics thinking they’d be okay. But holey-moley, they’re actually my favorite travel pics I’ve ever taken. And now I’m considering leaving my camera home more often. Hmm… Oh, and here’s a link to the tulip photos so you can see for yourself: http://travelbrowsingwithdeb.com/new-york-in-bloom-enjoying-bryant-park-and-those-spectacular-tulips/ (Just click on any photo to see it bigger) Good luck!
