Blogathon Haiku Day: An Ode to Don Draper

Don Draper, Mad Men season 6, episode 13, "In Care Of"

Editor’s note: Today is Haiku Day, one of the most popular days of the WordCount Blogathon, where everyone in the month-long blogging challenge is encouraged to write a haiku. In case you’re not familiar with it, a haiku is a Japanese poem form that consists of three lines with a total of 17 syllables: 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, and 5 in the third. — Michelle

I’ve been a Mad Men fan since season 1, episode 1. The show’s writing, acting, costuming, set design and music are some of the best you’ll see on TV. Last night’s season 6 finale, “In Care Of,” was the hightlight of a season that saw the country, Don Draper’s life and the world of SC&P in tumult. It also tied up some plot lines and leaving others to dangle, just the ambiguous way Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner likes it. My haiku pays homage to Draper, who spent this season on a downward spiral into alcoholism as he struggled to comes to terms with his upbringing, and finally begins to share the truth of who he is and how he feels with the people closest to him.

An Ode to Don Draper

Broken man flailing

Failing work, life yet slowly

Revealing his truth

Love Mad Men as much as I do? Read more: Why’s Mad Men so great? It’s the writing.

LOVE. It says so much about the show in so few words. Haiku day, a day I dreaded in my first Blogathon, has now become one of my favorites.

Thanks Tia. Haiku is magic, as you say, it’s become a Blogathon favorite.
