Thanks to everyone who participated in today’s WordCount Last Wednesday writer chat on finding new freelance writing clients. We had a larger than average size crowd, and people shared great resources and tips.
In case you missed the #wclw writer chat, here’s the complete transcript. Thanks to Hashtracking.com for archiving the chat.
This time I wasn’t able to get a transcript that reads in chronological order, so the beginning of this is the end of the chat. To read the chat from the beginning, scroll to the end of the post and work your way back up. Hashtracking is about to end beta testing and launch for real, and has promised to make a chronological transcript available again soon.
Join us for the next #wclw chat on Wednesday, Feb. 27, when we’ll discuss collections – tried and true tactics for getting publishers to pay what they owe. See you at 10 a.m. Pacific/1 p.m. Eastern.

about 2 hours ago Excellent resource! MT @MichelleRafter: UPOD, a writer listserv run by LA freelance writer David Hochmanhttp://t.co/CInTkY0W #WCLW
about 2 hours ago @MichelleRafter @UrbanMuseWriterSeconding on FLX. I’ve gotten clients through relationships I’ve built (not asked for) on FLX. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Agreed, FLX is a great community. The newsletter provided a tip that led to one of my clients. Much support from the forums, too. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Before time runs out, here’s a post I did for my freelance writing blog on other ways to find clients:http://t.co/N4yJhQLG #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q5: Another resource is UPOD, a writer listserv run by LA freelance writer David Hochmanhttp://t.co/WwsQX404 #wclw
about 2 hours ago FLX rocks! MT @UrbanMuseWriter: not a job board per se but I wanted to give a plug to http://t.co/mXmaLrCS(or FLX) -great newsletter! #WCLW
about 2 hours ago Just 1 follow up? RT @vanwaffle: I usually follow up after 2 weeks unless guidelines suggest otherwise. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @sgordonwriter Yes, I’ve been blogging for Ebyline for ~2 years. They’re getting more focused on specific locations & niches. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Agree, FLX is good. RT @UrbanMuseWriter: Q5 I wanted to give a plug to http://t.co/waRaqvjC (or FLX) – great weekly newsletter! #wclw
about 2 hours ago MT @UrbanMuseWriter: Yes, FLX is a great community http://t.co/juZQ0kBR (or FLX) – great weekly newsletter! #wclw
about 2 hours ago I usually follow up after 2 weeks unless guidelines suggest otherwise. After a month, I send the pitch elsewhere. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q5 It’s not a job board per se but I wanted to give a plug to http://t.co/xxcYjaDd (or FLX) – great weekly newsletter! #wclw
about 2 hours ago Talk to @urbanmusewriter, she blogs for Ebyline. RT @sgordonwriter: Is anyone getting work from Ebyline?#wclw
about 2 hours ago @WordScapes …(cont) I’m working with writers I already knew. As a management tool, I’m happy with how it’s working. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @stephauteri Yes, @Ed2010news is another good one, although sometimes low-paying. #wclw
about 2 hours ago So, as I was saying, Journalism Jobs (dot-com). I don’t know what’s up with Twitter and the weird links today.#WCLW
about 2 hours ago @WordScapes Re: @Contently – I’m using it as a project management tool for a freelance editing gig right now, but… (more) #wclw
about 2 hours ago @DionnaSanchez @swansonwriting: I want to do my due diligence before pitching elsewhere. Also, the deadline can spur them to action. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Yes, I have had more responses to followups. MT@stephauteri: @SwansonWriting: Followups are often when I get the assignment. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @stephauteri @SwansonWriting That’s a great way to word it. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Is anyone getting work from Ebyline? #wclw
about 2 hours ago No, nothing. RT @WordScapes:@MichelleRafter Related to Q5, is anyone getting any work from Contently? #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q5: I found my IRP fellowship throughhttp://t.co/Jj3OjTh3. That was a great experience. #WCLW
about 2 hours ago Yes RT @ThursdayBram You can also get recommendations/referrals from individual editors. There’s no relationship with (content) farms #wclw
about 2 hours ago A5. I keep track of job ads on mediabistro and ed2010 but, again, I don’t rely on job ads. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @stephauteri @SwansonWriting That’s a good tip…to give a deadline. I usually wait a few months and then just re-pitch or use myself. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @stephauteri Even then, eds sometimes respond on their timeline, not ours. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @MichelleRafter Related to Q5, is anyone getting any work from Contently? #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q5 Up to now, in all honesty, I haven’t had a particularly good experience with any freelance job listing services. Not one. #wclw
about 2 hours ago MT @SwansonWriting: I dont wait for responses anymore – after sending it off, just move on and be pleasantly surprised. #wclw
about 2 hours ago RT Q2: I would like to add 8 to 10 new markets in 2013. Particularly, I hope to break into science, nature and environment mags. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @SwansonWriting: Followups are often when I get the assignment… or at least a definitive response. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @LauraBWilliams2 @writererinraub that is prob.. years ago, most successful FLers jumped into it from journ jobs. Tough 2 do that now #wclw
about 2 hours ago Last one. Q5 – Apart from what’s already been shared, what online freelance job listing services would you recommend? #wclw
about 2 hours ago @SwansonWriting: I send up to two followups. Last one will say: “If I don’t hear from you by ___, I’ll assume you’re passing on this.” #wclw
about 2 hours ago LinkedIn is your friend for this RT@Lsamwrtrgrl: I would also like to pitch more corporate sites for writing and web editing. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @UrbanMuseWriter That’s great! Good persistence, and a good attitude. #WCLW
about 2 hours ago Tru Dat! RT @UrbanMuseWriter: Advantage to LOIs is that you arent laboring over a pitch only to find out the market doesnt pay #wclw
about 2 hours ago MT @SwansonWriting I don’t wait for responses anymore – after sending it off, just move on to the next thing & be pleasantly surprise #wclw
about 2 hours ago @Lsamwrtrgrl For corporate writing, have you tried getting involved in content marketing professional organizations? Could be a way in #wclw
about 2 hours ago @jenwillis Yes, a rejection is usually in terms like, “We don’t have room for this story.” That’s an invitation to pitch again. #wclw
about 2 hours ago I have better luck in person for this. RT@Lsamwrtrgrl: I would also like to pitch more corporate sites for writing and web editing. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @UrbanMuseWriter: And for some reason, *I* end up feeling guilty for backing out. Sigh. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @SwansonWriting That is good advice. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Yes! I broke into SELF after 10 no’s RT@jenwillis Rejection = a great foot in the door for pitching again with a different story idea #wclw
about 2 hours ago Yes, be persistent. RT @jenwillis Getting a rejection is a great foot in the door for pitching again with a different story idea. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @SwansonWriting Me too!! #wclw
about 2 hours ago Advantage to LOIs is that you aren’t laboring over a specific pitch only to find out the market doesn’t pay or isn’t open to pitches. #wclw
about 2 hours ago I don’t wait for responses anymore – after sending it off, just move on to the next thing and be pleasantly surprised. #wclw
about 2 hours ago We’re here every month! MT @LauraBWilliams2I am so glad there are chats like this to help newbies like me. Invaluable. #wclw
about 2 hours ago I would also like to pitch more corporate sites for writing and web editing. Have trouble finding good contacts #wclw
about 2 hours ago @LauraBWilliams2 If it works for you, go for it! I just haven’t had good experiences. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @vanwaffle Getting a rejection is a great foot in the door for pitching again with a different story idea. #WCLW
about 2 hours ago RT @MichelleRafter I always suggest writing for local news sites v. content farms because you’ll get > reporting training #wclw
about 2 hours ago That’s a new one on me. RT @Mango_Queen: My tip:Go alum homecomings & pitch to now famous classmates!#wclw
about 2 hours ago @stephauteri That happened to me on Friday after we scheduled a call to discuss. So disappointing. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Grt advice: RT @MichelleRafter I always suggest writing for local news sites v. content farms because you’ll get > reporting training #wclw
about 2 hours ago Yes, editors I know prefer pitches RT@mindtriptravel: LOIs by themselves have not worked. They did once I followed up with pitches. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @MichelleRafter I am so glad there are chats like this and other resources to help newbies like me. Invaluable.#wclw
about 2 hours ago @PhilippaWrites I think no response is the norm. I’ve had only two actual rejections. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @MichelleRafter just jumping in. Great chat.Finding good tips. Thanks #wclw My tip:Go alum homecomings & pitch to now famous classmates!
about 2 hours ago MT @PatrickJKiger I think places like Elance & oDesk reduce writing to commodity pricing. You want to be a value-added product. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @UrbanMuseWriter Interesting site! Thanks for the tip. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @writererinraub For experience, I always suggest writing for local news sites v. content farms because you’ll get > reporting training #wclw
about 2 hours ago Amen to this. RT @PhilippaWrites I don’t mind responses saying “no”. What I hate most is no response at all!#wclw #wclw
about 2 hours ago LOIs by themselves have not worked for me. They did once I followed up with actual pitches. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @PhilippaWrites Agreed. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @writererinraub I agree. But I have to start somewhere. I am building up some great work that I hope will move me forward. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Bahaha! RT @PatrickJKiger #wclw In retrospect, renting the chicken suit and standing on a street corner was not my best use of resources.
about 2 hours ago @Lsamwrtrgrl I’d branch into new areas by finding the intersection between my niche & the new one, ei Pets + personal finance #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q4: New to you, that is. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @UrbanMuseWriter: Hate it when that happens. I get excited about an opp, pitch them, they love me… then I must slowly slink away. #wclw
about 2 hours ago I don’t mind responses saying “no”. What I hate most is no response at all! #wclw
about 2 hours ago @Lsamwrtrgrl To branch out, consider pitching cross-over story to a current client & using it as a clip for that new subject #wclw
about 2 hours ago A4 Unless the editor gets some sort of personal recommendation on you, she’s prob not going to bite, in my exp.#wclw
about 2 hours ago @LauraBWilliams2 I think those online markets reduce writing to commodity pricing unfortunately. you want to be a value-added product #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q4: I’ve heard to expect about a 10% response rate from new pubs. #wclw
about 2 hours ago MT @stephauteri: And more competition! Its better to pitch someone + magically convince them: Holy hell, I need to hire this person! #WCLW
about 2 hours ago Q4 Occasionally I’ll write a killer pitch or LOI only to discover they don’t pay. Sites like @WhoPaysWriters help me avoid that. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Same here!RT @Stinsonwrites: @MichelleRafterQ4 Querying new-to-me pubs has had a limited ROI for me, as has responding to postings on #wclw
about 2 hours ago @MichelleRafter Content mills, Elance, Guru, etc. Craigslist also isn’t wonderful. (I did get one client I love there, though.) #wclw
about 2 hours ago therefore I have most success in areas I have loads of experience and not so much in others #wclw
about 2 hours ago A4 As a former editor, now freelancer, I can say it’s really hard to want to trust a new-to-me writer. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @SwansonWriting Glad to know its not just me…lol #wclw
about 2 hours ago @stephauteri Very good point! #wclw
about 2 hours ago @UrbanMuseWriter: Exactly. Yes. #wclw
about 2 hours ago RT @Stinsonwrites Q4 Querying new-to-me pubs has had a limited ROI for me, as has responding to postings on job boards. #wclw
about 2 hours ago It seems harder these days to branch out to new areas. ie, editors want to see clips exactly of the same type of material or topic #wclw
about 2 hours ago @jenwillis Not at all. I have much better luck with Craigslist and the money is good for someone just starting out.#wclw
about 2 hours ago @PhilippaWrites: And more competition! It’s better to pitch someone + magically convince them: Holy hell, I need to hire this person! #wclw
about 2 hours ago @MichelleRafter Q4 Querying new-to-me pubs has had a limited ROI for me, as has responding to postings on job boards. #wclw
about 2 hours ago I’m not new, but same here RT@LauraBWilliams2: Q4 Because I am new I am having no luck with sites like oDesk and Elance #wclw
about 2 hours ago Always the joker MT @PatrickJKiger: Q4 In retrospect, renting chicken suit and standing on street corner was not best use of resources #wclw
about 2 hours ago MT @PatrickJKiger In retrospect renting the chicken suit & standing on a street corner i NYC w/ sign was not my best use of resources. #WCLW
about 2 hours ago oops.thanks! #wclw @MichelleRafter did you ever write a blog post explaining how you built that pipeline? you’ve got awesome work flow.
about 2 hours ago Pitching in general just isn’t what is used to be. Lots of no responses. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @PatrickJKiger Too funny. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @stephauteri Q4 I only respond to job ads that are uber specific and fit my skill set to a t. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Thanks Mia! RT @MiaGeiger: Lots of good stuff, as usual, over at @MichelleRafters writer chat. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @LauraBWilliams2 The last time I checked, the rates/offers there were pretty low. Has that changed? #WCLW
about 2 hours ago @PatrickJKiger I’m glad you warned me, I was considering that approach myself 😉 #wclw
about 2 hours ago RT @LauraBWilliams2: Q4 Because I am new I am having no luck with sites like oDesk and Elance #wclw
about 2 hours ago @vanwaffle @jenwillis @Lsamwrtrgrl You’re welcome! They have an online form for pitching. Can’t remember the link, but ask @GlennF. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @stephauteri Me neither. It seemed like a lot of effort for very little return #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q4: sending LOIs = very mixed results. Some eds write back saying they have no budget or aren’t taking pitches, others never respond #wclw
about 2 hours ago #wclw Q4 In retrospect, renting the chicken suit and standing on a street corner i NYC w/ sign was not my best use of resources.
about 2 hours ago Lots of good stuff, as usual, over at@MichelleRafter‘s writer chat. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q4 Because I am new I am having no luck with sites like oDesk and Elance #wclw
about 2 hours ago A4. Though it’s worked for me a handful of times, I typically don’t spend too much time responding to actual job ads. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @PatrickJKiger Pat: don’t forget to put #wclwon chat tweets or I won’t see them. Yes, I’m doing on a post to diagram that. Should be fun.

about 2 hours ago @stephauteri Very smart use of How to Pitch articles. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @jenwillis This has also been my most successful tactic, when there’s a pretty close fit with my writing experience.#wclw
about 2 hours ago @jenwillis so if a pub has a new editor, do you do an LOI? #wclw
about 2 hours ago MT @MichelleRafter I befriend writers who cover subjects I do, so if/when they have overflow work they’ll think of me and vice versa. #WCLW
about 2 hours ago Re: The “perfect pitch”; knowing my subject got me the assignments. This is even more important for pitches to science mags. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Do you use LI or other sites? RT@MichelleRafter keep tabs on who’s moving where, who’s hiring – a new editor = new opps #wclw
about 2 hours ago @MichelleRafter It is but I need to do this full time because of some health issues so I HAVE to make it work.#wclw
about 2 hours ago @UrbanMuseWriter @sgordonwriter: I double check actual names on the most recent masthead of a publication.#wclw
about 2 hours ago Editors usually will take me to a new pub. Now budgets — esp for trades –are smaller #wclw
about 2 hours ago @UrbanMuseWriter @sgordonwriter: I check the How to Pitch pieces sometimes just for the email layout of a publication. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q3: I also befriend other writers who cover subjects I do, so if & when they have overflow work they’ll think of me and vice versa. #wclw
about 2 hours ago RT @MichelleRafter: Q3: I keep tabs on who’s moving where, whos hiring – a new editor = regime change = new opportunity for work. #WCLW
about 2 hours ago @Lsamwrtrgrl Which conferences do you attend? #wclw
about 2 hours ago Yes, lots of How to Pitch on MB out of date, but there are plenty of updated ones too. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @writererinraub I haven’t been, but I made some resolutions this year, and so far, I’m sticking to them! #wclw
about 2 hours ago I had a MediaBistro subscription years ago, but let it lapse. There was too much that was out-of-date. Has that changed? #WCLW
about 2 hours ago @UrbanMuseWriter @sgordonwriter and I feel like everyone and their mother pitches them at the same time#wclw
about 2 hours ago Amen! @Lsamwrtrgrl I find best clients come from referrals or those who have read my work or those I meet at a conference #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q3: I keep tabs on who’s moving where, who’s hiring – a new editor = regime change = new opportunity for work.#wclw
about 2 hours ago @UrbanMuseWriter Yes I do. #wclw
about 2 hours ago I always personalise my pitch, depending on the client or publication. Sending the same thing to everyone doesn’t work. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @jenwillis Thanks. Maybe someday! I barely have time to brush my teeth these days. #wclw
about 2 hours ago That’s a huge work load RT @LauraBWilliams2: From Craigslist clients I am now up to a commitment of 15 articles a week… #wclw
about 2 hours ago @sgordonwriter Do you find that How to Pitch articles are sometimes out-dated? That’s been my experience.#wclw
about 2 hours ago I find best clients come from referrals or those who have read my work or those I meet at a conference #wclw
about 2 hours ago @jenwillis I’ve tried one to CSM. Might try a different idea with them. #wclw
about 2 hours ago RT @PenAndInkSpot: @mediabistro AvantGuild membership is great for ideas on which mags to pitch and finding new ones. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @MichelleRafter Yes, more corporate work – I’ve gotten blog posts for small businesses, and web content. #wclw
about 2 hours ago 🙂 RT @vanwaffle I have had articles in two food magazines so far, with repeat assignments for both of them coming up. #wclw
about 2 hours ago That was weird. I was suggesting Salon for essays, and Twitter made this weird URL out of it. #WCLW
about 2 hours ago RT @mindtriptravel Forget advice of perfect pitch. It just needs to grab attention and you need to followup. Persistence. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @mindtriptravel @vanwaffle true! Follow Follow Follow up! #wclw
about 2 hours ago @WordScapes Yes, so many “travel writing” jobs pay poorly. Do you actively market? That’s how you find the good stuff. #wclw
about 2 hours ago From Craigslist clients I am now up to a commitment of 15 articles a week and I have to logo jobs I am working on. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @LauraBWilliams2 @MichelleRafter Nowadays it seems to be more common so that strategy doesn’t work as well#wclw
about 2 hours ago Smart RT @LauraBWilliams2: I look in Orlando and Tampa in existing ads & post my own for graphic design & writing. #wclw
about 2 hours ago RT @sgordonwriter: The AvantGuild membership is great for ideas on which mags to pitch and finding new ones. #wclw

about 2 hours ago Q3: My first assignment came from an immediate response to my follow up. She had missed my original email. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @LauraBWilliams2 @MichelleRafter in 2008 I landed a few decent-paying clients via CL because I posted offering my ghostblogging skills #wclw

about 2 hours ago For corporate writing? RT @SwansonWriting:#wclw A3 joining some local networking groups has been a good route for me. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q3: If they are rejected or you receive no response, don’t forget to follow up and eventually recycle them.#wclw
about 2 hours ago MT @stephauteri: A3. For new clients, I pitch cos I admire w/how I could help them. I also get clients from word-of-mouth, referrals. #wclw
about 2 hours ago I made sure I had a great website to send them to and that all information was professional. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @jenwillis @vanwaffle What are some good markets for essay writing? Just curious. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Not necessarily wearing people down of course! Just need to get better at following up #wclw
about 2 hours ago Also, I check out the portfolios of other writers in my niches. That often reveals other potential markets. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @mblakewrites I work slowly. I’ll spend a couple hours a day over several days writing a new pitch. #wclw
about 2 hours ago I look in Orlando and Tampa in existing ads and I post my own for both graphic design and writing. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @sgordonwriter Have you landed work through@mediabistro AvantGuild? Responded to editors profiled in How to Pitch? #wclw

about 2 hours ago @vanwaffle pitching for me is a struggle. How long does it take you to do one? #wclw
about 2 hours ago I got an Avant Guild membership through Media Bistro; that’s been helpful. Check their “How to Pitch” section for updates. #wclw
about 2 hours ago @LauraBWilliams2 Say more about mining Craigslist for work. Do you look only in your city? Specific keywords? Types of work? #wclw
about 2 hours ago @LauraBWilliams2 Really? How many responses did you get from people wanting you to work for free (or nearly free)? #WCLW
about 2 hours ago @WestofMars I know, a really pleasant surprise!#wclw

about 2 hours ago A3. For new pubs —> I also check out the sidebars of pubs I’m familiar with within a niche to see who’s on their blogroll. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q3: Believe it or not, I’ve had the best success with just pitching or sending targeted LOIs to editors I want to work with. #WCLW
about 2 hours ago So my efforts then have paid off, even though it’s taken a while. #wclw
about 2 hours ago P.S. I write on health, consumer stuff, personal finance, and quirky topics that come to mind, usually pets or animals are involved. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q3: My only strategy so far has been sending well-researched, well-considered pitches. #wclw
about 2 hours ago In the last few weeks I’ve been approached by 2 people I contacted months ago. They didn’t need a writer then but kept me in mind #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q3 Believe it or not all my clients except for one I got from ads I posted on Craigslist #wclw

about 2 hours ago HI @MichelleRafter, joining your chat a bit late.#wclw #wclw
about 2 hours ago @jenwillis Really? Now that some pubs are hiring again, maybe they’ll go back on staff. Freelancing isn’t for everyone. #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q3 – When it comes to finding new pubs or clients, what tactics have worked for you in the past? #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q2: Also want to do more essay writing. #wclw

about 2 hours ago RT @mindtriptravel: @writererinraub I got rid of a low-paying one once, and it freed up time to go after bigger fish. (Grt advice!) #wclw
about 2 hours ago @UrbanMuseWriter Most of them entered the freelance pool. #WCLW
about 2 hours ago @MichelleRafter It can be done, if some of them are short blogs that don’t take up much time #wclw
about 2 hours ago Q2: Not sure I would want 8-10 regulars, just new markets to expand my repertoire. #wclw

about 3 hours ago Q2: My hat’s off to writers who can juggle more 6-8 regulars, I’m not sure I could do it very well. #wclw
