Come tomorrow, stop what you're doing and vote

Tomorrow is Election Day. In honor of the occasion, I’m interrupting my regularly scheduled posts to encourage everyone to take a few minutes out of your normal routine and vote.

Here in Oregon, we vote by mail. I sent in my ballot last week, so I’ll be spending tomorrow with one eye on work and the other on the news.

I can still remember the first time I voted in a presidential election. My candidate didn’t win. But the feeling of being part of the process was exhilarating. All that came back to me when my daughter called very excitedly from college last Friday afternoon to announce she’d just cast her own first ballot in a presidential election. The fact that she had to wait in line an hour and a half at an early voting station in the state where she’s at school didn’t phase her.

As a reporter, I keep my political views out of my work. But I don’t have any problem encouraging people to vote – that’s not crossing any ethical line, just being a good citizen.

Tomorrow, who you select is between you and your ballot. Just make sure that you get out there and vote.
