J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism and the McCormick Tribune Foundation are giving $10,000 to three women-led journalism start ups. Projects have to related to the news business and winners have to blog about their first year getting a venture off the ground. Read all about it here. Submissions are due May 1.

The project one effort to keep women in news. According to the 2003 Annual Survey of Journalism and Mass Communications, even though women make up nearly two-thirds of J-school students they’re only a third of the full-time journalism workforce, a ratio that hasn’t changed in more than 25 years.

J-Lab and the McCormick Tribune Foundation run the McCormick Tribune New Media Women Entrepreneurs project, an initiative to bolster journalism careers for women.

J-Lab: is an incubator of participatory news experiments run by the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism.
