			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Writing for content aggregators and rates that those companies pay are currently much-discussed, much disagreed upon subjects in the freelance writing world &#8211; and that&#8217;s putting it mildly.</p>
<p>Some novice freelancers see writing for <a href="http://www.demandstudios.com">Demand Studios</a>, <a href="http://www.examiner.com">Examiner.com</a>, <a href="http://www.helium.com">Helium</a> and other content aggregators as a legitimate way into the business. They&#8217;re willing to put up with working conditions that make more experienced writers cringe: fees of $10 to $20 or less per article that necessitate cranking out dozens, even hundreds, of pieces a month to make a decent living.</p>
<p>The site&#8217;s defenders counter that most contributors write only part-time, and don&#8217;t depend on it for their livelihood. They also argue it&#8217;s a great way to get a foot in the door and get writing work without going through the hassles and rejections of querying higher paying publications.</p>
<p>Detractors have questioned whether anybody can research and write a &#8220;story&#8221; in the amount of time it would take to produce enough copy to make much money. They also worry that writers for these sites are merely rewriting other people&#8217;s work. This snippet from an honest-to-goodness ad that appeared recently in <a href="http://www.craigslist.com">Craigslist</a>&#8216;s Portland listings appears to prove their point (emphasis is mine):</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Here&#8217;s the job:</em></p>
<p><em>1 &#8211; I send you a link to an article.<br />
2 &#8211; You read the article.<br />
3 &#8211; Then <strong>you rewrite/summarize the article</strong>, adding a few sentences that are specific to our business. In general, I will expect to get your writing back within 24 hours of my sending the article. If it doesn&#8217;t happen every time, that&#8217;s fine. You get to go on vacation once in a while! But the general expectation is speed.<br />
4 &#8211; I edit the article and send you the finished version.<br />
5 &#8211; You look at it, think about what I&#8217;ve changed, and what you could do differently next time to get it more like I want it.<br />
6 &#8211; Repeat<br />
7 &#8211; Once a month, I mail you a check. <strong>You get $3 for one sort of blog post</strong> (3-4 formulaic paragraphs) and <strong>$5 for another </strong>type (longer, more thoughtful, or a press release). It&#8217;s $3 unless I say otherwise.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>I&#8217;ve called it <a href="http://michellerafter.wordpress.com/2009/09/08/the-race-to-the-bottom/">the race to the bottom</a>, and maintain there are better ways to break into the freelance business, and better business models for building a successful freelance writing career.</p>

<p><strong>Standing up for writers</strong> &#8211; Today is the <a href="http://loriwidmer.blogspot.com/2009/05/second-annual-writers-worth-day.html">2nd Annual Writers Worth Day</a>. Lori Widmer, a Valley Forge, Pa., writer, dreamed up the campaign to help writers and other freelancers do a better job negotiating fees and standing up themselves. I&#8217;m down with that. As I&#8217;ve said here before, <a href="http://michellerafter.wordpress.com/2008/11/12/writing-for-free-is-not-a-business-model/">writing for free is not a business model</a>.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://writeononline.com/2009/05/11/write-on-onlinethe-write-environment-query-contest/">Write On! Query contest</a></strong> &#8211; The southern California-based Write On! writers&#8217; support group led by veteran freelancer Debra Eckerling is sponsoring a query contest with winners in screenplay, teleplay, fiction and non-fiction categories. First prize in each category is the opportunity to have a literary agent read your query, plus an iScript recording of the project and Save the Cat software.  Second and third prizes will be given in each category too. Entries are due by June 22 and winners will be announced July 7. Visit the website for more details.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=101&amp;aid=163202">Reporters go online, bloggers go to class</a></strong> &#8211; Membership in the <a href="http://www.journalist.org">Online News Association</a> is up by a third this year as more old-school journalists retrain themselves in News 2.0, according to this Poynter Online report. Meanwhile, traditional journalism groups are changing their policies to allow bloggers and citizen journalists working in non-traditional media outlets to become members or take part in conventions and seminars.</p>
<p><strong>Micropayments anyone?</strong> The Wall Street Journal will <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUSLA52492520090510">introduce a micropayment system</a> this fall for individual articles and premium subscribes to its website, according to this Reuters piece. Good thing it&#8217;s the WSJ doing the experimenting. According to PaidContent.org, a <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-newspapers-arent-dead-yet-pwc-says-pins-survival-on-tying-mass-marketin/">new study on what news readers will pay for</a> says beyond financial info, it ain&#8217;t much.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/2009-Gerald-Loeb-Award-bw-15225530.html?.v=1">2009 Loeb Award finalists announced</a></strong> &#8211; UCLA Anderson School of Management&#8217;s Gerald Loeb Awards are awarded to the year&#8217;s best business news stories. Winners will be announced June 29. The bad economy, real estate industry meltdown and collapse of prestigious Wall Street firms figured heavily in this year&#8217;s competition.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2009/05/12/post-by-email/">Emailing in your blog posts</a></strong> &#8211; WordPress bloggers can now post new material to their blogs via email. The blogging software company rolled out a new feature this week that lets people post new material from an iPhone, Microsoft Outlook or anywhere else you can send email.<br />

<p><strong>A group of reporters displaced</strong> when Denver&#8217;s Rocky Mountain News folded have started an online-only news outfit called <a href="http://scoopingthenews.blogspot.com/2009/03/indenvertimescom-is-future-of-online.html">InDenverTimes.com</a>. The basic news service will be free, with subscriptions available for interactive features.</p>
<p><strong>While community news ventures</strong> like InDenverTimes.com, newspaper companies and other online entrepreneurs continue to explore viable financial options for delivering online news, Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-Md) introduced a <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSTRE52N67F20090324">bailout bill</a> that would allow papers to operate as nonprofits. Under the bill, papers could still sell ads and subscriptions but would be prohibited from endorsing political candidates.</p>
<p><strong>For a peek at where business news is headed,</strong> look at the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) <a href="http://www.sabew.org/news/2008/132-2008BIBwinners.html" class="broken_link">Best in Business </a> winners for 2008. In addition to print winners, SABEW recognizes excellence in online breaking news, projects, multimedia storytelling and blogs. This year&#8217;s winners include several online only news organizations: the re-vitalized <a href="http://www.industrystandard.com">Industry Standard</a>, plus <a href="http://www.bnet.com">BNet</a>, <a href="http://www.thestreet.com">TheStreet.com </a>and <a href="http://www.blumsday.com">Blumsday</a>, a daily tech blog.</p>
<p><strong>As more newspapers and magazines slash freelance budgets, </strong>independent writers are scouring <a href="http://www.craigslist.com">Craigslist</a> and other freelance job boards for work. But not all opportunities are what they seem. Some job listings that require writers to turn in spec articles in order to be considered for work are scams, a practice veteran freelancer Erik Sherman <a href="http://tinyurl.com/c3x54u">rails against</a> in a particularly scathing rant on his <a href="http://www.eriksherman.com/WriterBiz/">WriterBiz</a> blog. Freelancers, consider yourselves warned.</p>
<p><strong>With use of <a href="http://www.twitter.com">Twitter</a> growing</strong> by tens of thousands of new users a week, freelancer Susan Johnston posted this list of <a href="http://tinyurl.com/ccnnjt">50 freelancers to follow on Twitter</a>.</p>
