I too see signs of life in the freelance writing profession. Ironically my work in the old media has picked up considerably — newspapers and magazines — but long term I don’t think we can count on this for our livelihoods. Which is why I’m involved in a new hyperlocal website — Berkeleyside.com — which isn’t providing income yet, but I hope one day soon will. Local is the way to go — for traditional media too — as you’ve pointed out yourself.

I wouldn’t mind a few more paid magazine assignments or a spokesperson project. But in the meantime I’m focusing on books–fiction AND non fiction. Hopefully there will be something cool to report in Publishers’ Lunch soon.
