I spoke with a lot of other writers at the conference and they think Derek is definitely on the right track -- that this type of initiative is much overdue. I am skeptical, however, because too many writers tend to be so desperate to get their work out there that they'll underprice themselves, or worse, work for nothing. Printers, electric companies, etc. won't do that. Until all writers stand firm, it will be hard to press publishers successfully. I hope this works out.
